Michael O' Grady wrote:

Hi, guys —

Would it be a sin for a Catholic to buy Apple iPad or iPhone products. I read that Apple:

  1. freezes human eggs
  2. pays towards surrogacies for their employees, and
  3. donates to other groups for this purpose.
  • Hence, can I buy Apple products?

God bless,

Michael O' Grady

Mike replied:

Hi Michael,

I really empathize with your dilemma. I would be interested in the group’s advice on this question since I can see both sides.

Paul or Eric are probably the best ones to answer your question and I’m guessing a good part of the answer deals with the culpability of the individual to the proximity of the immoral act.

That’s my two cents.

Eric replied:

Michael —

There is no hard and fast rule on this; it's a matter of prudential judgment. If you avoided every company that did something immoral you would have to join the Amish.

Mike is right that it has to do with the proximity to the immoral act and I don't think buying Apple products would be sufficiently proximate, unless of course you said,

Oh? Apple pays for surrogacy? . . . Then I want to support Apple for that reason!

That would be wrong.
