Hi, guys —

My name is Yusuf. I am a former Catholic and I left the Church.

  • According to the Catholic Church would a person like me, who converts to Islam or someone who leaves Catholicism for another faith, go to Hell?

Yusuf

  { If a Catholic converts to Islam or leaves Catholicism for another faith do they go to Hell? }

Mike replied:

Dear Yusuf,

We have answered a whole array of questions similar to this in the:

Questions on the Catholic doctrine "Outside the Church there is no Salvation" section.

As of August 2012, there are 24 questions in this section, that are similar to yours, which have been answered on three pages.

I suggest you read all of them if you want a good Catholic answer to your question.

The following hypothetical question and the answer (that references other related postings) does a pretty good job of covering all bases brought up in your question.

As I said in my opening answer: It depends.

I would just add that one of the most important things the Catholic Church respects is an individual's free will. This is also why God never sends people to Hell; rather people, with their own free will, freely choose Hell.

If a Catholic wishes to leave the Church, for whatever ignorant or erroneous reason, they may.
This is unlike Islam, where if a Muslim left Islam, in all probability, they would be killed.

As this Wikipedia article pointed out:

According to the traditional Islamic view, the Qur'an (Koran) began with revelations to Muhammad (when he was 40 years old) in 610.

That said, Catholic Christianity founded by Jesus, had already been in existence for over 575 years! and unlike Jesus, Muhammad could not bring himself back from the dead.

As I former Catholic, if you had been going to Sunday Mass on a regular basis, I'm sure you remember St. Paul's warning not to follow other false preachers that would come after Jesus.

If you are truly interested in being a Muslim, you will have to do a better job in answering questions, than Furyoku Sakuruu did.

I hope this answers your question.

Let's pray for each other!

Mike
