Hi, guys —
I just realized something as I was reading over your question and answers and am now so worried,
I do not know what to do.
I was away from the Catholic faith for over 20 years before I went to Confession and was reconciled back with the Church. Before I came back to the Church I married a man who:
- was never baptized
- never went to church, and
- had no experience with any religion.
Before we were married he had a vasectomy. He said it was something he wanted and I supported him, as I did not want anymore children due of health problems, so he had it done. He had one child from a first marriage and I had two from my first marriage, though they were non-Catholic marriages. A couple years later, he went to RCIA and became a Catholic and we have been devout ever since.
We were originally married in a courthouse but wanted to get married in the Church so we:
- went to our priest
- filled out the necessary paperwork, and
- waited until we had permission to receive the sacrament of Marriage in the Church.
It did not even dawn on me to tell them he had a vasectomy years before. Now I realize the full gravity — from reading your site — of the sin.
If I were a devout Catholic, at the time, I never would have encouraged or supported this action. My husband, had absolutely no clue of the importance of this matter and could not foresee becoming a Catholic.
- So is our marriage null and void?
- Is our marital sex a sin?
- Should I schedule an appointment with our priest?
Please respond. I already torment myself with past sins as it is.
