Edward Howatt wrote:

Hi guys,

May I please know the position of the Pope and the Catholic Church with regard to fertility clinics and invitro fertilization?

I should also like to know the official position on what should be done with the embryos being preserved by these clinics and which no one wants.

Thank you for your assistance.

Edward

  { What is the Pope and the Church's view with regard to fertility clinics and invitro fertilization? }

Eric replied:

Hi Ed,

Artificial methods of reproduction violate the life-giving relationship of conjugal love and the marital embrace. All people deserve to be conceived as an act of love between husband and wife. See this portion of the Catechism:

<http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art6.shtml#2376>

The official position on what should be done with the embryos being preserved by these clinics, and which no one wants, is an open question that moral theologians are now trying to grapple with.

Eric
