Marty Rogan wrote:

Hi, guys —

I wrote to Pope Benedict XVI earlier last month.

  • How long should it be before I receive a response back from the Vatican?

Thank you for answering my question. May the Good Lord be with you always,

Mike replied:

Hi, Marty —

I've sent several things to the Vatican, but never heard back. I'm not sure they have a system in place for replying to the massive e-mails and letters they must receive.

Richard replied:

Hi, Marty —

The few times I've written, e.g., with a Peter's Pence donation, an acknowledgment came much later: several months in the form of a thank you note.

Some letters don't get a direct reply, but get forwarded to someone in the right department for consideration.

Since the major Vatican offices (the "Congregations") are supposed to be mainly at the service of the Pope and bishops, they often don't reply directly to laymen, but send back a response via the writer's local bishop.

Martin replied:

Hi Mike and Richard,

I wrote to you some time ago about getting a response back from the Vatican.

Well, today in the mail I saw an envelope with the Vatican return address from Washington, D.C.
I received a letter from the Secretary of State saying Pope Benedict XVI received my letter and told the Secretary of State to say thank you to me from the Pope.

In addition to that letter, I received a hand-signed picture of the Pope. I was very surprised to see this. I am happy and honored to receive such a great letter so tell visitors to your web site and others that you can get a response back. You might want to post something on your web site about this.
